Ranew's Hit Lifts Leon Over Rebs
A pinch hit single by Tommy Ranew in the bottom of the eighth inning
lifted the Leon Lions to a 4-3 Big Five Conference victory over the Escambia
Rebels here yesterday. Ranew's hit followed singles by Bobby Kubie and
JeffPomeroy and scored Kubie. Franklin Thompson went the distance on the
mound for Leon and struck out 19 batters en route to his third victory against
one defeat. John Harrison rapped a solo home run in the first for
the Lions. Leon scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth when Wayne
Searcy singled, Kubie walked, Bud O'Hara walked to load the bases. Pomeroy
hit a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Searcy and Kubie scooted home when
the throw from right field got by the catcher. The triumph lifted Leon's
overall record to 6-2 and gave them a 3-2 BFC ledger. Escambia is now 3-4
overall and 1-2 in the conference. Winning run scored with 2 out in the eighth
